Barry Orr is the Sewer Outreach and Control Inspector for the City of London, Ontario with over 25 years of experience in environmental and wastewater fields. He is an active member and spokesperson for the Municipal Enforcement Sewer Use Group in Ontario, is a member of the Canadian Water and Wastewater Association, the Water Environment Association of Ontario and a voting committee member on Grease Interceptors B481 with the Canadian Standards Association. He is the author of many articles published in Water Canada’s Magazine, Environmental Science and Engineering Magazine, WEAO’s Influents Magazine and a co-author of the Ryerson University report: Defining “Flushability” for Sewer Use. He is also one of the sewer professionals featured in Canadian newspapers and media networks like CBC, CTV, and Global featuring segments on “not flushable” and Fatbergs. Barry was one of the guests featured in the Water Brothers episode “The Big Leak” http://thewaterbrothers.ca/big-leak/ and on an interview with Steve Paikin of TVO’s The Agendahttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0Eqfsc89-Q  Barry is known as Captain F.O.G. across Canada and can even be found in a comic called “The Adventures of Fatberg” https://www.watercanada.net/fatberg/   The Standards Council of Canada and the International Organization for Standardization appointed Barry as an expert representative on their “flushable” workgroup in May of 2014. Barry has also been named as the Canadian representative/spokesperson on the International Water Services Flushability Group. June 2015/2020 Barry received the Water’s Next award for Government:https://watersummit.ca/22233/ https://watersummit.ca/waters-next/2020-winners/ the selection panel noted “Mr. Orr is both a leading voice and tireless advocate within the wastewater and water treatment sector, creating positive change and identifying clear and costly problems and then advancing very practical and doable solutions”. The your turn cup for residential fats, oils and grease was created in London, Ontario by Barry’s team and can be found in use by over 15 Canadian municipalities. The City of London can proudly say that some 125,000 cups have been handed out to London residents. Barry’s work has even caught the attention of the Japan Sewage Works Association and in January 2017 Barry presented across Japan on “Source control is the most cost efficient and sustainable method to protector our sewer system infrastructure and water environment”.
